How To Write Clean Code?

As software developers, writing code is definitely a priority for us. Just like architects, whose task is to design beautiful and good looking buildings, our job is quite similar.

We're hired to create automation solutions to problems that exist in different industries. Sometimes, people only tend to evaluate the final product, which is the app/software/solution we present them.

However, there is much more to this story. The foundation of the final product is the code. And, when the code is well written, everything flows much better.

So, how can you possibly write better and cleaner code? The cleaner your code, the better you'll be seen as a professional and the easier it will be for you to make adjustments, correct bugs and implement new features in the future.

Are you interested in writing cleaner code? Watch this video and find out!

My Junior Is A Fierce Competitor... What Should I Do?

Have you ever felt threatened by others employees? We all have been there. We have this nature of comparing ourselves to others. When it comes to this competitive world we're in, this can only result in anxiety and bad feelings.

But, comparing yourself to established employees is one thing. What if this fierce competitor of yours is your junior?

In this video, I received a question from a reader telling me he was feeling threatened by his junior. This guy is a genius and everything he does, he does it right. He has all the good ideas and he is definitely competition.

However, the guy who emailed me is in management position and he can compete with him directly. What should he do? How should he approach this situation?

Should he try to overwork this guy? Should he get into direct competition with him?

How To Develop Self-Discipline?

Self-Discipline... Something that we all are aware of, we understand how important it is, yet we fail to manage it.

Why so many people fail in developing self-discipline? Why do people find so hard to stick to a plan and follow it? Why is it so difficult to change your mind and develop new and healthier habits?

In this video, I'll talk more about how you can start developing self-discipline into your life and how you can regain control of yourself.

How To Move From Beginner To Advanced Programming?

You're a beginner programmer. You don't know everything that the programming world has to offer but you know some stuff. However, you feel trapped. You feel like you're in place where you want to move from beginner to advanced programming but you don't know how.

This is a place where a lot of programmers get stuck when they try to develop their skills. They feel that they already know some stuff but they don't know everything. And so, they can't get the strategy to move forward.

I've been caught in this place for a long time. For years, I felt like I knew some stuff, I wanted to learn more but I was not yet an advanced programmer. Until I learned to learn.

How Long Does It Take To Write A Blog Post?

If you're a blogger you've probably wondered if the amount of time you spend writing a blog post is "normal". Maybe you spend 8 hours writing a 500-word blog post. Or maybe you spend weeks trying to come up with a 2000 word blog post.

How in the hell will you know if this is normal? How can you possibly know if this is a decent amount of time you should spend trying to write a blog post when you don't have anything you can rely on?

Well, the amount of time you spend writing a blog post will definitely depend on and rely on a lot of different factors. Time, research, ability etc. So, is there an amount of time you can use to measure your performance when writing a blog post?

Is Software Development Analytical Or Art?

A lot of people tend to ask me "John, why do you think that software development is art?".

I do think software development is art. While this might seem controversial, let me explain my point. First of all, we need to understand how hybrid things are nowadays. It's difficult to find something 100% pure in 2016. Things mix up with other things and they get a whole new meaning when that stuff happens. Said that, I do think that Software Development is analytical. And a lot.

However, if you think of software development just as something analytical, you'll probably be left behind by the ones who understand that software development is also an art.

When you start to see programming as an art, you'll understand that you have the power to build anything. You, as a developer, has the ability to build an entire universe, just by writing code. And this is where the art comes in.

Why Is Marketing "Result Oriented"?

If you deal with marketing in your day-to-day life, you've probably heard that marketing is a "result oriented" thing. But, what do I mean by marketing being "result oriented"?

Whenever you try to market something, you need to focus on the results you're bringing to your audience, instead of the features of your project. But does it have an explanation for it?

Well, in fact, yes. When you focus on the result you go straight to your audience's dreams and desires. When you focus on the results that your product can bring, you open the eyes of your customers to how their lives can change after they buy what you have to offer. And this little tweak on the way you market your products or services can literally change how your customers perceive the value of your offer and increase the chances of people buying it.

I Became A Manager And I Don't Write Code Anymore... What Now?

Becoming a manager is a part of some software developers. They work during some years, get to know the company, get some experience and they eventually become managers.

However, the job of a manager includes a lot of different tasks than writing code: you need to manage people, have social skills, have the ability to manage projects, manage time, tasks, etc.~

With all of these tasks, writing code becomes almost secondary and can literally disappear from your day to day and regular tasks.

So, what do you do after you become a manager and don't write code anymore? Will you lose your skills? How can you revert this situation? Should you even revert this situation?

A lot of people have the dream to become freelancers. They aim that by working as freelancers they would get more flexible with their agenda and even make more money.

However, becoming a freelancer isn't easy. There are a lot of questions that need to be answered and this can cause some confusion. I tried to answer some questions on this video:

1) I have a great idea and I can hire someone to do most of the code. But how do I find someone that will not steal my idea?
2) I freelance my services. Do I need to incorporate / register as a LLC?
3) As a freelancer, should I buy liability insurance?
4) What is your opinion about freelancer.com and similar sites? Okay in some cases or better to find someone local?

Should I Sacrifice My Sleep So I Can Work More?

In this video, I'll talk a little about sleep deprivation. Sleep deprivation is when you give up your sleep in exchange of other "more important tasks".

Today I received a question from a reader asking me about sleep deprivation. In this video, he asked me if it was ok to sacrifice his sleep in order to work more and advance in his career.

Do I Need A Prestigious Degree To Get Hired By A Big Company?

This is a question I receive a lot: "John, do I need a prestigious degree to get hired by a big company?".

People fear that they won't be able to get hired by a big company like Google or Microsoft if they don't possess a prestigious degree. Is is true?

Big companies have merely two ways of recruiting people:
1- They use recruiters and get people right from universities. Those are the really big universities, the prestigious one.
2- They get a referral.

If you don't fit on the first option, there is definitely other paths you should follow to get hired by a big company. Bottom line is: No... You actually DON'T need a prestigious degree to get hired by a big company.

Are Hybrid Apps A Good Choice?

Hybrid Apps seem to be getting a lot of attention over the last months. People are experimenting and it seems that we have a lot more of these type of apps being produced.

But... What are hybrid apps?
According to techtarget.com, "A hybrid application (hybrid app) is one that combines elements of both native and Web applications. Native applications are developed for a specific platform and installed on a computing device. Web applications are generalized for multiple platforms and not installed locally but made available over the Internet through a browser. Hybrid apps are often mentioned in the context of mobile computing.".

Developers are beginning to realize the importance of hybrid apps and how much they're getting their market share increased.

So, the question is... Are hybrid apps a good choice? Should you focus and invest in those type of apps?

How Do I Find A Job In A Small Niche?

How are you supposed to find a job in a small niche? A lot of people are afraid of taking the leap and investing in a career they like because of fear. It happens more often when it's a small niche we are talking about.

A lot of people fear that they won't be able to get a job and live a stable life if they invest and a small niche.

In today's episode, I answer the question from a reader that wants to work with CUDA. For those who don't know, CUDA is an engine from Nvidia that has almost no "open job offers" on the internet.

He is afraid that, if he invests in this new technology, he won't be able to get any jobs. Is he right?
